James Walton

PBN Founder

James Walton is a prominent figure in the preparedness and survival community, best known as the owner and "Intrepid Commander" of the Prepper Broadcasting Network (PBN). He is a freelance writer, speaker, and podcaster with a focus on disaster preparedness, self-reliance, family, and outdoor adventure.

James Walton is a preparedness consultant, author, speaker, and urban homesteader with more than a decade of hands-on experience helping people think more practically about self-reliance, household resilience, and what it really takes to be ready when normal systems are disrupted.

James has hosted the I AM Liberty show since 2013 and has owned the Prepper Broadcasting Network (PBN) since 2018. Today, he oversees a 15-host network producing daily programming on preparedness, homesteading, self-reliance, survival, and resilient living, along with an extensive archive representing nearly two decades of conversations with experienced practitioners throughout the preparedness community. That experience gives James an unusually broad perspective. Through his own work and thousands of hours of PBN programming, he has explored subjects including family emergency planning, food and water resilience, backup power, grid-down preparedness, communications, medical preparedness, evacuation and get-home planning, everyday carry, personal security, gardening, food production and preservation, homesteading, off-grid living, wilderness skills, community resilience, and long-term self-sufficiency.

His knowledge is also grounded in daily practice. James and his family have spent years turning their approximately 0.8-acre Central Virginia property into a productive urban homestead, raising chickens, maintaining gardens, cultivating fruit and perennial food crops, experimenting with backup power, and developing practical ways to become more self-reliant without moving to a remote retreat. He has also helped establish a neighborhood community garden.
