Every item in our kits was personally bought and field-tested by us before it was included. We tested ferrous rods at different thicknesses and lengths - anything under three-eighths of an inch in diameter snapped under novice pressure, and anything under six inches didn't give enough strike zone. We settled on the rod we ship because it survived real use. We chose gauze with baking soda because the alkalinity of baking soda changes the wound bed, reducing infection and improving healing time - that's a documented medical fact, not a marketing claim. Nothing ships in a kit until we've used it ourselves.
If an item in your kit needs a size, you'll be able to select it — such as gloves or a rain poncho. Some kits allow you to configure it for a length of time and add additional people to it.
